This past Valentine’s Day weekend, the campus of Indiana University was filled with over 1500 gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, and ally activitists coming together to at the Midwest Bisexual Lesbian Gay Transgender Ally College Conference (MBLGTACC) to discuss issues relevant to the GLBT community in the Midwest, and around the country. It was a great conference with some really high quality workshops about how students and community members can engage in sex-positive activism that works as well as interesting research presentations around issues facing this unique community.
One highlight of the conference for me personally was spending my Valentine’s Day evening with the women of the Kinsey Sicks. A bit about these lovely ladies according to their website:
“For nearly 15 years, The Kinsey Sicks, America’s Favorite Dragapella Beautyshop Quartet, have served up a feast of music and comedy to audiences across the United States and internationally. Combining award-winning a cappella singing, sharp satire and over-the-top drag, The Kinsey Sicks have developed a large and loyal following.”
And I believe it. Their show was hilariously entertaining with witty satire and commentary on a host of topics from the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq to pubic hair and drug testing. They have lovely voices and were all around a super fun way to spend Valentine’s Day.
Lucky for us, they also wanted to see their namesake, the Kinsey Institute.
Unfortunately, I didn’t get to go along with their tour but they graced the Kinsey Insitute with their presence and Jenny, our Communications director with a little song. Lucky!
Check out these photos of the men behind the women of the Kinsey Sicks. The above photo includes the ladies as well as LZ Granderson, a keynote speaker from the conference who talked about his experiences as a gay man of color in the professional sports world.
The next photo to the left features the Kinsey Sicks and LZ Granderson with some fabulous Kinsey staff members and MBLGTACC volunteers as well as Jenny in the middle of all the fun!
Finally, the last photo to the right are two members of the Kinsey Sicks modeling our fab Kinsey Scale t-shirts. You can purchase one here. Hurray for puns and fun queens!
