As Spring Break approaches, we’d like to take a little bit of time to send out some friendly reminders.

The next few weeks will be a well-deserved break for students at universities who have been working hard this semester. I know college kids hear the same stuff all the time about Spring Break from parents and professors – “Don’t drink!” “Stay with your friends at all times!” “Don’t make eye contact with anyone” – and my personal favorite, coming directly from my dad – “Hire a bodyguard so you’ll be safe.”

I know that we college students generally groan, roll our eyes and let out an exasperated, “I know!”, but do we really know? I’m planning on leaving for Cozumel, Mexico in a few days, and my best friend will be attached to my hip the entire time (whether she likes it or not).

Spring Break destinations (especially ones outside the US) are unfamiliar grounds. It really is imperative that students are smart about Spring Break. Drunk people are especially easy targets for rape, robbery, and other various crimes.

If you do drink, do it wisely. Plan how much you will be drinking beforehand and stick to it. I don’t know about you, but I plan on remembering my week in Mexico fondly while I’m stuck in the cold classrooms that will be waiting for me when I come back. Before you go out, have a specific plan. Make sure you know exactly how you’re going to get back to your hotel. Don’t ever leave your friends alone with anyone you don’t know. It’s also a good idea to have the number of the local police department – just in case.

Drinking has more of an effect when you’re out in the sun and also when you’re in the water.  Please remember this when you’re out on the beach or by the pool. Use sunscreen and drink lots of water! I sound so much like our mothers, but whether we like it or not, they’re right.

Always use a condom if you’re planning on having sex, and don’t forget that this month Planned Parenthood is giving away free Plan B pills!

Remember you are on Spring Break to have fun and relax so enjoy yourselves!
